Economic and agricultural assets

Economic and agricultural assets

The soil of the region is conducive to a wide range of food crops, the main ones being plantain (in the southern part), yams called "Kpona", corn, rice, cassava, vegetables, citrus fruits and various fruit and vegetable products.
Cashew nuts are the main industrial crop in the region and their marketing remains the primary economic resource. In addition to this crop, cocoa and coffee are produced in small quantities in the southern part of the region.
The prospects of the Gontougo region are essentially based on the processing and development of agricultural resources. However, like other Ivorian regions, it offers major opportunities in energy production, construction (infrastructure and buildings), waste management, water management, etc.

Ecological and tourist assets

The Comoé National Park or Bouna Reserve with 1,150,000 hectares is located in the Zanzan district. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. There is a diversity of animals: monkeys, baboons, patas, vervets, hartebeests, warthogs, buffaloes, hippos and elephants. It offers exceptional opportunities for tourism.

The park has unfortunately been abandoned in some places, due to the various political crises that the country has gone through. The local authorities are now working to restore its biodiversity and fight against deforestation and poaching. The city of Bondoukou also has many projects to enhance its historical and environmental heritage.
